Former India's veteran footballer and famous coach Subhash Bhowmick died in Kolkata after a long illness. In 1970, he was also a part of the Indian Indian team that won the Bronze medal in the Asian Games.

New Delhi. Former India's veteran footballer and famous coach Subhash Bhowmick died in Kolkata after a long illness. He was 72 years old. In his career, Subhash also represented the country's 2 major football club East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. From 1970 to 1985, he referred to India in many international tournaments. In 1970, he was also a part of the Indian Indian team that won the Bronze medal in the Asian Games.
His family sources said that he was suffering from kidney disease and diabetes for a long time and breathed his last at 3.30 am. He said that he was going through dialysis regularly for the last 3 and a half months. He also underwent bypass surgery about 23 years ago.
Career surrounded by controversies
After retiring from the game, he pushed his career forward in coaching. He first joined Mohun Bagan as a coach and then became East Bengal's most successful coach. While his coach, East Bengal won the ASEAN Cup title in 2003. He was called 'Jose Marinho' of Kolkata Maidan.

Bhowmik started his career with Rajasthan Club at the age of 19. This right winger kept his dominance in national football for a decade due to his skills. He made a hat -trick against the Philippines in the 1971 Murdeka Cup. His career was also surrounded by controversies, as he was arrested and sent to jail after being found guilty in a bribery case in 2005.
