Carney criticized Trump
Typically, a newly elected Canadian leader prioritize a phone call with the US President soon after assuming the post, but Trump and Carney had not talked till date. Carney strongly criticized Trump's decision to put heavy tariffs on cars this week.
Trump's proposed 25 percent duty on vehicle imports in the US is about to apply next week and may be disastrous for the Canadian auto industry, which supports an estimated 500,000 jobs. After Trump's announcement, Carney stopped his election campaign and returned to Ottawa for an emergency cabinet meeting to work on a strategy in the trade war with the United States.
He said that Canada would retaliate against auto tariffs, calling them “inappropriate” and violation of existing trade agreements. But Carney's most attention -drawing statement was that Trump has permanently changed the relationship between two North American neighbors.
Carney has given warning
Trump has repeatedly stated after returning to power in January that close NATO colleague Canada should become a 51st American state. Carney said, “The old relationship with the United States, which was based on the deep integration and tight security and military cooperation of our economies, is over.” Carney warned that unless the President shows Canada “respect”, especially by eliminating threats of his frequent addiction, he would not participate in a meaningful business talks with Washington.
