Sunita Williams has returned to Earth after spending more than 9 months in space. He is currently in the rehabilitation of the US space agency NASA for a few days. She went to the International Space Station (ISS) for only 8 days, but had to stay there for 9 months due to technical fault. In such a situation, the question was arising in the mind of almost all the people that how much money and overtime NASA would give to Sunita Williams and her partner Buch Wilmore to spend so many months in space?
Astronauts like Sunita Williams and Buch Wilmor get the same standard salary as other government employees. They work 40 hours a week and do not get additional salary for overtime, weekends or holidays. According to NASA, astronauts earned more than $ 152,000, or Rs 1.32 crore last year.
Even while in space, astronauts get their regular salary, as they are considered as government employees on an official visit. This means that NASA bears their transportation, stay and food expenses. They also get additional money for small daily expenses, which are called 'casual expenses'. Right now, this amount is 5 dollars i.e. 430 rupees daily. Sunita Williams spent 286 days in space. In such a situation, he got $ 1430 i.e. about 1.23 lakh rupees.
Many people were surprised to get such a small amount to Sunita Williams and her partner Buch Wilmor, while many were also expressing their displeasure. Perhaps his displeasure will say that US President Donald Trump has made a big announcement about these astronauts. Trump said on Friday that he would give over these two NASA astronauts from his pocket in lieu of spending extra time in space.
Trump also thanked Allen Musk for the SpaceX Dragon Freedom spacecraft used to bring the stranded astronauts back home. At the same time, when he was asked about Sunita and Buch, which he 'helped save from space, he did not get any overtime salary'. So Trump said, 'If I had to do it, I will pay from my pocket… and I want to thank Allen Musk because think what would have happened if they were not with us'.
Trump's comment came a few days after Williams and Willmore ride in a SpaceX dragon spacecraft on the coast of Florida on Tuesday. The Starline spacecraft of Boeing went to ISS with him and he had to return after 8 days. However, in the meantime, there was a technical fault in the vehicle. Starlineer returned to Earth alone, while Sunita and Buch remained at the space station.
