UPI app will be closed for these users from April 1! Will not be able to make online payment

UPI's service will be stopped for these people

Highlights

  • From 1 April 2025, UPI users with old mobile numbers will be affected.
  • NPCI implemented a new rule to stop cyber fraud.
  • Update the mobile number to avoid problems in UPI payment.

New Delhi. If you use UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, then there is an important update for you. A new rule will be applicable from 1 April 2025, under which mobile numbers related to bank account which are not active for a long time will be removed from the UPI system. This change will affect those users whose old or closed number is connected to the bank account. If you too have linked an old or closed number to the bank, then you may have difficulty in doing UPI transactions.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has taken this step to prevent cyber fraud and technical disturbances. Many times after the mobile number is closed, telecom companies allot it to another user. In such a situation, the risk of fraud increases on the bank account connected to the old number. For this reason, NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to identify inactive mobile numbers every week and remove them from their system.

There may be a problem in UPI payment
Your mobile number for UPI transaction should be linked to the bank account. If your number has been closed for a long time or has not been updated after taking a new SIM, then after April 1 you may have problems in UPI payment.

How to avoid this problem?
If you want your UPI payment to continue without any interruption, then you have to take these steps:
1. Check the mobile number connected to your bank account. If the number is closed or old, then update it immediately.
2. Contact your telecom provider (Jio, Airtel, VI, BSNL) and confirm that the number is still registered in your name.
3. If your number is closed and allotted to someone else, then go to the bank and link the new number.
4. Go to Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and update your number and bank details.

NPCI will update data every week
NPCI has directed all banks and UPI apps to update the list of inactive numbers every week. This means that if your number is not active for a long time, it can be removed automatically from the bank's record. So always keep your number active and updated.

Are your number active for UPI? Check like this
Log in in your bank's netbanking or mobile banking app and see the registered mobile number.
Go to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm and verify the linked number there.
If the number is closed, then complete the process of linking the new number immediately.
